Bananas from the Finca Villa LoboThe Finca Villa Lobo is in the Dominican Republic and is part of the Milagros cooperative which has been growing organic bananas since 2007. Only three years later‚Villa Lobo began cultivation in accordance with strict Demeter guidelines – a rigorous and strict form of organic.
Since 2013 the organic bananas from Villa Lobo are also certified in accordance with FairTSA-Standards. This guarantees producers stable minimum prices which, at Villa Lobo, are 10% above the standard market prices. In addition there is also a Fairtrade premium which is directly used for improving the living and working conditions of the local plantation workers.
Good reasons for fairtrade with Villa LoboIt is the members of the cooperative themselves who democratically determine how the Fairtrade premium is used – whether for social, economic or ecological purposes. Their first decision has already been realised with the installation of 20 new toilets for the plantation workers and their families in the nearby Villa Lobo settlement.
Before these were built many of the village toilets were in a very bad condition: without doors and some surrounded only by cardboard or plastic foil.
It is quite hard to imagine that the comfort which we take for granted in the West does not apply to everyone.
The new toilets contribute to the improved hygiene and health and, not least, more dignity for the people of the Villa Lobo settlement. In the next project, showers will be built. The additional FairTSA premium will also be used to help workers gain access to dental care.
FairTSA – what is it?FairTSA stands for Fair Trade Sustainability Alliance. This non-profit organisation sets standards for fair working conditions and fair trade.
FairTSA offers a streamlined efficient programme which ensures that the small farming enterprises and farm employees receive the premium.
