Ecological cultivation themed week

From 11th to 15th July, the Bundesverband Naturkost Naturwaren (BNN) e.V. (German Association of Organic Processors, Wholesalers and Retailers) is dedicating itself to the theme of ecological cultivation. During this themed week, the association will present the work of many growers on Facebook and Twitter as well as to select media representatives.

We would like to ask for your support for the “Ecological Cultivation” themed week. Why?

Five large companies are in control of 95% of the European seed market for vegetables. Most of what they offer comprises of hybrid seeds, seeds which can be used once, which farmers have to buy new each year if they want at least a little planning security regarding their yield. In addition, the industrial companies are increasingly expanding their range with genetically modified seeds which they register with the European Patent Office to legally prevent any possibility of reproduction. Furthermore, in Germany alone, 50 million chicks are killed immediately after hatching each year. What may sound like an apocalyptical future scenario is, in fact, the sad reality.

Here a glimmer of hope is provided by the many different initiatives in the ecological cultivation sector. They are challenging the supposed invincible agricultural giants, patent rights on life and GM technology. Their goal is to maintain the dignity of plants and animals and their efforts in this field are the key to this.
For many years, old and new varieties as well as breeds have been discovered, combined, selected and developed further – of course in accordance with the requirements of the ecological cultivation idea. The enterprises in the BNN-Monitoring are also aware of the enormous relevance of this work and last year started funding ecological vegetable cultivation projects with a total of 470,000 euros.

We at BioTropic have been a member of BNN-Monitoring for already many years and support ecological cultivation with funding for the Saat:gut project (the “Seed Project”) and the Swiss organic cultivation company Sativa.

So, for all of you who want as many people as possible to find out about “ecological cultivation”, please share, “like”, comment on, get involved and recommend this further. During the themed week you can share tweets under the hashtag #oekovielfalt and, if you have any ideas or want to suggest further exemplary initiatives, please send these to Marcel Werdier (This email address is being protected from spambots. If you would like to find out more, the article by the BNN offers further information (unfortunately, only available in German).
