Initial situation

In 2008, we launched an ambitious project in the tropical Ivory Coast: the adoption of organic cultivation in the country as part of a PPP (Public Private Partnership) programme. Pineapples were the first certified organic products of Ivoire Organics – the regional producer group made up of small farmers with which we work. The German PPP support partner was SEQUA, a non-profit implementing organisation in the German business sector.

Burkina Faso & Senegal

Depending upon which harvest they come from, our African mangoes are grown either in Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast or Senegal. Our purchases represent a great opportunity for the small farmers of these countries to provide them with financial security, added to which our purchases support smallholders as well as local eco-farming. In addition to this, we support the co-operatives with our sales potential and many years’ experience of eco farming. For this reason, our managing director and the person responsible on site, agricultural economist Kuemkwong N. Siemefo, regularly travels to the three countries to check the processes.

Milagros cooperative

Initial situation

The members of the Milagros cooperative are seven small banana farmers from the region around the city of Mao. Between 2007 and 2009, as part of a PPP programme, public funds from the DEG Bank and BioTropic were used to set up a watering system, build a flood protection gate and lay additional cableways for banana transport. In addition to this, all the members of Milagros were given further training in organic farming. The country is one of the world’s biggest producers of organic bananas.  In comparison with other agricultural countries, the plantation agriculture in the Dominican Republic is heavily dominated by small farmers.

Ecological Centre Cibao

In 2015, the Ecological Centre Cibao opened on the site of the Dominican BioTropic office in Mao. The building of the approx 5 ha site lasted almost three years. The Ecological Centre Cibao specialises in research and education and plays an active role in increasing public environmental awareness in the region. Particularly pupils and students of this country benefit from the centre.
