Fresh organic mangoes from sunny Andalusia

The end of August is the harvesting season for organic mangoes in Spain. A group of BioTropic employees – Ronald Vianen, Pernille Kroyer Dynesen and agricultural engineer Mauro Finotti – paid a visit to our cultivation partners just before the harvest.

The mango trees grow in the midst of a hilly landscape near to the coast, situated between Málaga and Almeria in southern Spain. The coastal region – also known as the Costa del Sol – is one of Europe’s sunniest stretches of land. With its very particular microclimate, it is the perfect region for cultivating exotic fruit such as the mango.

The “Osteen” mango variety is particularly well-suited to the climate and the soils; it is the most widely cultivated organic mango in the region. The “Osteen” mango has an oval shape and is green and violet in colour. The mangoes are harvested shortly before they are fully mature, but they can then continue to ripen, their colour often taking on red and yellow tones in the process. However, the skin colour does not necessarily say anything about the degree of maturity; the smell and the resistance of the fruit pulp are the crucial factors as far as this is concerned.

One of the six cultivation partners whom we visited was Vicente Terrón. His 8-hectare farm is situated in a remote area in the hinterland of Vélez-Málaga. He has been an organic farmer for more than 20 years now.

In addition to mangoes, our producers also cultivate organic avocados – but on a smaller scale. The first early variety – called “Bacon” – will be available at the start of September.
