Supporting education with stationary and clothing

The children of the Milagros staff and workers were bright-eyed again in good time for the beginning of the new school year in August. It wasn’t so much going back to school itself that was the reason for the enthusiasm of the children, but the smart rucksacks, school uniforms and other resources required for school every day in the Dominican Republic. Altogether 15 schoolchildren benefitted from the school accessories, which were alternatively also obtained with a coupon worth 100 Euro handed out for the purchase of school uniforms and resources.

Some of the support is financed by FairTSA with the fair trade premium, the other contribution comes from BioTropic’s own funds.

The school accessories afford the children the opportunity to attend school and to claim their right to an education. Admittedly, schooling is compulsory in the Dominican Republic, but it is chiefly the less-well off families who can hardly afford to buy their children the school uniforms they need or the transport to school. But acquiring an education is a fundamental step to escaping from poverty in the longer term.

The children and the youngsters (and their parents) were genuinely pleased to receive the present and we wish them much success in their schooling.
