A visit by the German-Dominican Chamber of Foreign Trade and a new member in BioTropic

The German-Dominican Chamber of Foreign Trade visits its members. Our office in Mao was the first host of the round of visits. About 20 members and employees of the Chamber of Foreign Trade had an opportunity to form an opinion of the innovative eco-business at first hand. Volker Schmidt, Aquilino Cruz and other Biotropic employees showed the representatives of the Chamber of Foreign Trade around their site. The visitors appeared to be impressed by the banana plantation and the new "Cibao" eco-centre. This teaching and research park will probably be inaugurated in spring 2015. Even now it was already possible to see diverse things ranging from extensive open-air cultivation to a greenhouse of 600 square metres or so for growing vegetables, on to a wind wheel and a photovoltaic system, which also gave the visitors an insight into renewable energy as well as eco agriculture.

Since October the Dominican Biotropic office has moreover been reinforced: Erika-Luisa Herrera will be supporting the team for a year as a volunteer for the "Weltwärts" development policy service. The 19-year old with a German-Peruvian background has just taken her A levels and wants to take advantage of the coming months to acquire wide-ranging experience as an adjunct for her dream career in environmental protection. Her work assisting the setting up of the "Cibao" eco-centre will be just what she needs to assist her in her later career. She grew up bilingual and is very familiar with Latin-American culture, and this has already enabled her to settle in well in Mao Valverde.
