Why an organic apple from overseas is preferable to a conventional apple

When spring really gets going in Europe, and everywhere plants are sprouting and blooming, the apple season here has long since ended. At this time of year, European apples are only available from cold storage. In other parts of the world, however – in Argentina and New Zealand, for example – juicy-fresh apples are being harvested. But what about sustainability? Don’t these apples require lots of resources? After all, first they need to be transported to Europe.

Bright orange and aromatic: Nadorcott mandarins from BioTropic

In 2008, Soumia Lomri and Emile Grac fulfilled their wish of setting up their own fruit plantation. The husband and wife obtained land in Morocco that suited their requirements, in the form of a 100-hectare plot between the port city of Essaouira and Marrakesh. On one third of the area, they planted mandarin trees, while on the remaining smaller areas, they planted oranges and figs. Neither of them are newcomers to agriculture, as both Grac and Lomri also used to market aromatic spices in their original homeland of France.

Relaunch: greenorganics is presenting itself in a new way

The entry-level organic brand, greenorganics, is presenting itself from now on in a new, fresh way. What has stayed the same is the proven quality.
The first products with the remoulded design are also “the newbies” in the greenorganics range: the milk substitute trio from greenorganics. Packaging which has existed until now will be gradually adapted to the new design.
The new milk substitute drinks will be revealed to the public at our stand at Biofach 2018.

Aftermath of storm damage in the Dominican Republic

Volker Schmidt is an agricultural engineer and our on-site tropical expert in the Dominican Republic. Born in Germany, he has been living in the north of the country since 2002, where he runs our BioTropic office. He checks all the processes that Milagros bananas go through, from their cultivation to their transport to Europe. He also travels regularly to Costa Rica, Ecuador and Peru, where our producers grow organic-quality avocados, ginger, turmeric and mangos. Schmidt maintains close contact with local organic farmers and assists them with any questions they have.
